Jan Hendrych (*1936 in Prague) - Guardian (2014-2015)

Hendrych's ceramic sculpture Guardian (2014-2015) installed by the castle gate is shown in a determined, straddling posture, with robust armour. The figure belongs to the circle of guardians of significant (or sacred) places, which they protect from the enemies and possible danger.  Sculptures of this type hold an important position in the context of Hendrych's work. Very often they refer to mythology, where guardians play the part of protectors and carers, as well as faithful companions of heroes. A guardian can therefore be not only a human figure, a divine being or an animal, but also a mythical beast. In fact, their task is always the same - to protect wealth, temples, castles, tombs, an entrance to the underworld, but also the sources of life, such as springs. It is not unusual to find guardians protecting treasures of spiritual value, especially wisdom and secret knowledge, or even the entire order of the world.
